Dana Carvey is trying to make peace with Madonna. The Master of Disguise actor said sorry for an awkward comment he made to her at a Saturday Night Live after-party in the early 1990s, when she appeared in a “Wayne’s World” sketch.
“She was really cool, but I said something dumb without realizing it,” Carvey said on his podcast Fly on the Wall. “She came to our table, and I think I said, ‘The thing I admire most about you is how fit you are.’”
Carvey explained that Madonna didn’t take it well. “She basically said, ‘That’s what you admire about me? I’m a f—ing artist!’”
Feeling embarrassed, Carvey made things worse by jokingly flipping her off. “I panicked and did this Chris Farley thing — I gave her the finger and said, ‘Madonna, can you hear this? Let me turn it up for you,’” he said, mimicking the gesture from The Breakfast Club.
But Madonna didn’t hold a grudge. “About half an hour later, she came back and sat on my lap — not in a flirty way, just friendly,” Carvey said.
He admitted that at the time, his fame from SNL and Wayne’s World had gone to his head. “This was around 1992 or 1993. I had Wayne’s World, six Emmy nominations — I thought I was untouchable,” he said.
Carvey ended the story with an apology: “I made a mistake. If Madonna’s listening, I’m sorry. It was rude.” Still, he thinks she might have respected his attitude. “I think she kind of liked that I stood my ground — like a street thing,” he said.
He also praised Madonna’s huge influence on pop music. “When you look at Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and all these stars — Madonna started it all,” he said.
