Kevin Federline has revealed a surprising story about Britney Spears and her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Federline, 47, said that the night before he and Spears got married in September 2004, she called Timberlake — two years after their breakup to get closure before starting a new chapter.
“I thought she was talking to her mom,” he said. “Then she told me she was on the phone with Justin.”
Federline said he was shocked and told her they didn’t have to get married if she wasn’t sure. “I said, ‘We don’t have to do this.’ But she said she just wanted to say her final piece.”
He added that he “took it with a grain of salt” at the time and believed she was just trying to “close a chapter” in her life. “I was really young and madly in love,” he said. “They had gone through everything in public as teenagers, and I know they really cared about each other.”
Federline admitted he felt Spears wasn’t completely over Timberlake when they married. Spears and Timberlake dated from 1999 to 2002. In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears revealed she became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby but had an abortion because he wasn’t ready to be a father.
Timberlake later apologized publicly in 2021 for how he treated Spears after their breakup, including releasing the song “Cry Me a River,” which portrayed her negatively.
Federline’s memoir You Thought You Knew comes out Oct. 21. In it, he writes that he worries about Spears’ current situation, saying it seems to be “racing toward something irreversible.”
A spokesperson for Spears responded, saying, “Kevin and others are once again profiting off her, especially now that child support has ended. Britney only cares about her sons’ well-being.”
Federline insisted the book isn’t about money. “I did this for my kids,” he said. “I wanted them to be old enough to understand. Everything I’ve done has been for my family.”
