The idea of a female James Bond? Not so fast! Helen Mirren firmly rejected that concept, arguing that “007 can’t be a woman” because “James Bond has to be James Bond.” In her view, if you change that, it becomes an entirely different movie. Mirren, a staunch feminist, insisted, “It just doesn’t work” via TMZ.
Pierce Brosnan, Mirren’s co-star in “Thursday Murder Club” and former 007, echoed her sentiments. He wished the next Bond well and remarked that now, as part of the audience, he’s curious to see what direction they take.
With Amazon MGM reportedly paying an astounding $1 billion to producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to take over the franchise, everyone is buzzing about who will step into Bond’s shoes next. Rumors suggest that Henry Cavill, Lucien Laviscount, Idris Elba, Harris Dickinson, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are all in contention, reinforcing the notion that the role was always intended for a man.
As for the iconic “Bond girl” position? That isn’t going away anytime soon—so Hollywood ladies, keep those auditions coming!
Since Daniel Craig stepped down from his role as James Bond in 2021, rumors have circulated about who might take on the iconic role next—and whether it could possibly be a woman. The speculation intensified after Amazon acquired the Bond franchise in February. It was reported in June that Amazon is interested in casting a British actor under the age of 30.
Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson are said to be at the top of the list (although Elordi is Australian, which apparently isn’t a dealbreaker). Denis Villeneuve, known for directing “Dune,” is set to direct the upcoming James Bond film, with “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight writing the script.
