Former royal butler Grant Harrold shared amusing memories from his time with the British royal family, including a funny moment at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding. Harrold recalled that after the long ceremony, Prince Philip turned to Queen Elizabeth and said, “Thank f*** that’s over,” which made many laugh and summed up the relief felt after the lengthy service and animated sermon by Bishop Michael Curry.
Harrold said he watched the wedding from outside with special tickets. Guests were given picnic bags containing shortbread, water, and a chocolate coin in a commemorative bag. He felt the view from outside was better than being inside since he could see more and hear the entire service.
He also spoke about Prince Harry’s humble side, remembering a time when Harry cleaned up after a guest’s dog rather than expecting staff to handle it. Harrold said this showed how down-to-earth Harry really was.
Looking back at his early years as a young butler in the 2000s, Harrold described the overwhelming but magical experience of joining royal life. At the annual Ghillies Ball in Balmoral, which is held to thank the staff, he was nervous about joining in until Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, encouraged him, reassuring him that he didn’t need to worry about dancing with the Queen among 150 guests.
Harrold’s upcoming book, The Royal Butler, set to release on August 22, will share more of these stories. His reflections mix humor, honesty, and heartfelt moments, painting a more human picture of the royal family behind the traditions and formality.
