Billie Joe Armstrong might not have appreciated it, but Liam Gallagher certainly did.
It’s become a tradition at Green Day shows for the band to invite musicians in the crowd to join Armstrong on stage and accompany him on “Good Riddance” on acoustic guitar. At the band’s performance in Luxembourg, however, the chosen fan went off course by playing a different tune, which at first confused the California frontman.
Shortly a clip went viral of Armstrong looking bewildered while a fan strummed the opening chords to Oasis’ signature hit, as opposed to the 1997 Nimrod cut, the song the prankster was supposed to play.
Billie Joe Armstrong might not have appreciated it, but Liam Gallagher certainly did. Gallagher has now shared his approval on X. Replying to a video of the incident, he wrote sarcastically, “Best song of the night.”
Critics flocked to the comments section to weigh in on the mishap, with one social media user writing, “Why do people keep taking once in a lifetime opportunities from real Green Day fans?”
A second chimed in, “The crappy thing about this is he not only ruined his chance to play with an amazing band, but someone else lost out too. Such a shame.”
Other followers saw it through a more light-hearted lens.
“Idk i think it’s kinda funny,” another person chimed in. “It’s like being able to claim you rickrolled green day live and onstage. I know billie joe thought it was funny.”
As Green Day continues its summer run of shows and festivals, Oasis is also gearing up to hit the road again for the first time in 16 years. After burying the hatchet and putting an end to a years long feud, Liam and brother Knowl Gallagher will finally reunite on stage on Friday, July 4th, kicking off a global tour with a show at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
