Kate Middleton was unexpectedly absent from the second day of the 2025 Royal Ascot on Wednesday, June 18, even though she was originally listed to attend with Prince William. Despite her last-minute withdrawal, the royal family remained in high spirits during the annual event.
In Kate’s absence, Prince William joined King Charles and Queen Camilla in the traditional carriage procession. William also had a special role this year he presented the trophy for the Prince of Wales’ Stakes, which was won by the horse Ombudsman, ridden by jockey William Buick.
Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, was present and appeared to enjoy the day, attending with her daughter-in-law Alizée Thévenet, who is married to Kate’s brother, James Middleton. Carole was seen warmly chatting with both Prince William and King Charles during the event, showing the strong family bond.
This marks the second year in a row that Kate has missed the Royal Ascot. In 2024, she was also absent while undergoing chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer, which she publicly shared in March of that year.
According to royal insiders, Kate has been easing her way back into public life throughout 2025, choosing carefully which events to attend based on her health and well-being. Ailsa Anderson, Queen Elizabeth’s former spokeswoman, explained that Kate is being cautious and smart about her return.
“She’s being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life,” Anderson shared.
