Noel Gallagher Got The Smiths Member To Quit Drinking

The annals of rock history are often filled with tales of camaraderie, generosity, and the unique bonds that musicians share. Sometimes, these stories transcend the music they create, reminding us that the rock ‘n’ roll world is, at its core, a community. One such story revolves around the iconic guitarist Johnny Marr, a broken guitar, and his enduring friendship with Noel Gallagher.

It all began with a simple, yet significant act of kindness. Johnny Marr, known for his work with The Smiths and his acclaimed solo career, once gifted a young and “skint” Noel Gallagher a guitar. Back then, Gallagher was just another aspiring musician, struggling to make ends meet. Marr, recognizing Gallagher’s passion and talent, decided to lend a helping hand.

The guitar Marr bestowed upon Gallagher was no ordinary instrument. It was a 1960 Gibson Les Paul, an iconic piece of rock history. This particular guitar’s illustrious past included being featured on The Smiths’ 1986 album ‘The Queen Is Dead’ and once belonging to none other than The Who’s Pete Townshend. However, its destiny took a sharp twist when Gallagher, dealing with a stage invader during a gig in Newcastle, smashed it to pieces.

As reported by NME – Unfazed by the destruction of his generous gift, Johnny Marr received a call from Gallagher, who requested a replacement. Without hesitation, Marr handed over his black 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom. It was a gesture of camaraderie, solidarity among musicians, and a testament to the power of music to bring people together.

Marr’s giving spirit didn’t stop there. He also gifted his 12-string sunburst Gibson 335, featured in the video for ‘Sheila Take a Bow,’ to former Suede guitarist and producer Bernard Butler. This act of generosity underscored Marr’s belief in the power of music to build bridges, connect souls, and make someone’s day a little brighter.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Marr explained his motivation for these generous gestures. “It’s just to be nice,” he stated, emphasizing the simplicity of his actions. He gave these guitars not for fame or recognition, but because he understood the struggles of emerging musicians and the impact that a helping hand could have. His own journey in the music world was filled with challenges, and he wished that someone had offered him a similar act of kindness.

However, the most surprising revelation came when Marr disclosed why he gifted Noel Gallagher yet another expensive guitar. His response was both humorous and profound: “I must confess it’s why I quit drinking.” The statement, perhaps made half-jokingly, hinted at the power of music and camaraderie to inspire positive change. It’s a testament to the deep impact that music and musicians can have on one another’s lives.

Despite the turbulent history between the Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, their enduring friendship has been a symbol of unity and resilience in the music world. Johnny Marr’s act of kindness and his enduring friendship with Noel are reminders that music transcends rivalry and ego, bringing artists together in ways that extend beyond the stage.

The collaboration between Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr has brought about some memorable musical moments, from Oasis to Noel’s High Flying Birds. Their recent work on Gallagher’s new album, ‘Council Skies,’ demonstrates their ongoing creative synergy. Although they’ve never sat down to write a song together, their musical connection is undeniable. As Marr himself explained, “I could just hear it and knew it.” This musical chemistry underscores the depth of their connection and the magic that can happen when two musical geniuses unite.

In the end, Johnny Marr’s story reminds us that while the music industry may be filled with ups and downs, it’s the bonds formed and the kindness shared that truly define the rock ‘n’ roll community. It’s a tale of redemption and transformation, where a guitar gift becomes a symbol of enduring friendship and the power of music to change lives.
