Damon Albarn adored a squid-shaped hat with Danny Devito’s photograph on it during their group Gorillaz’s recent show in Georgia. Attendees at Gorillaz’ Alpharetta gig on Wednesday (October 19) captured Albarn sporting his distinctive piece of headgear while singing ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’ from Gorillaz’ self-titled first album. According to a post-show Reddit thread, Albarn obtained the hat from a mosh pit fan who “got the crowd to give it up to Damon.”
Albarn’s spontaneous costume was part of Gorillaz’ larger concert schedule, which included performances by EarthGang, Bootie Brown, and Fatoumata Diawara. The show was part of the virtual band’s continuing North American tour, their first in the area since 2018, when they supported ‘The Now Now.’
Albarn followed ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’ with another self-titled album cut, ’19-2000,’ during the Georgia event, along with a bevvy of other songs from Gorillaz’ seven-album discography. ‘Rhinestone Eyes’ from 2010’s ‘Plastic Beach’ and ‘Désolé’ from their most recent album, ‘Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez’ were also standouts. This will be followed by ‘Cracker Island,’ which will be released in February 2023.
‘Cracker Island’ was preceded by two singles: the title track, featuring Thundercat, in July, and ‘New Gold,’ featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown in August. Stevie Nicks, Bad Bunny, Beck, and Adeleye Omotayondare are set to participate on the new album. Beck recently played his piece, named ‘Possession Island,’ with Gorillaz at the band’s September gig in Los Angeles.
