The Music was a band of guys in their late teens and early twenties from Leeds. In the early 2000s, they scored a few indie dance hits with songs like “Take The Long Road And Walk It” and “The People.” After releasing three studio albums, the Music split in 2011. Since then, lead singer Rob Harvey has remained a prominent member of the British indie music scene performing under the name The D.O.T. with Mike Skinner (formerly known as the Streets).
I always considered the Music to be way ahead of their time. Indie dance music is huge right now but back in 2002 when the Music released their self-titled debut, that wasn’t the case. If the Music had debuted today, they’d be huge. Back in 2002, we were still clinging to indie guitar pop and the garage rock revival.
The Music were known for releasing numerous EPs and singles with b-sides just as strong as their album tracks. Here are some of my favorites:
“Dragon Song” from the “Getaway” single
“Raindance” from the “Take The Long Road And Walk It” single
“Jag Tune” from “The People EP”
“You Might As Well Try To Fuck Me” from the EP of the same name
