Whether you realise it or not, Brian Cannon is central to the images you associated with Britpop. The driving force behind Microdot Creative, which he established in 1990, Cannon designed some of the most iconic album sleeves of the Britpop era. He created all of Oasis and The Verve’s sleeves released in the ’90s, and has also worked with Suede, Super Furry Animals, Ash, Ruthless Rap Assasins, and various companies since then.
In this Microdot Lecture, Cannon talks you through his career and his unique, painstaking approach to designing. Accompanying this talk are photos of his most iconic shots, as well as some outtakes which are, I’m assuming, previously unseen by most people.
For a more recent, shorter lecture which wraps up his career and album sleeves, watch this.
Both lectures are incredibly interesting, insightful, and presented with genuine warmth, passion and comedic undertones.
