Five of the Most Fashionable film stars of all time

We live in an age where celebrity culture is extremely popular, with the world’s most famous movie stars embodying this better than anyone. Hollywood’s leading men tend to influence the prevailing fashion trends throughout the Western world, while even those from yesterday remain cultural icons in terms of the clothes that they wear and the way in which they carry themselves.

With this in mind, here are five of the world’s most fashionable male actors from history.

Humphrey Bogart

The original hard-boiled icon, Humphrey Bogart is commonly regarded as one of the very finest actors of all time. Famed for his role in the iconic hit Casablanca, Bogart was always immaculately presented and set numerous fashion trends during his time on the silver screen. From his brooding, rebellious attitude to his sharply cut suits; everything about Bogart screamed high fashion and established the icon as a template for thousands of less fortunate men around the world to follow.

Gene Barry

The star of hit films including The Atomic City and The War of the Worlds (and also the two-hour long Columbo pilot); Gene Barry always seemed to embody wealth, success and an innate sense of style. His role as the manipulative psychiatrist in the Columbo pilot stands out from a fashion perspective, however, as the star wore immaculately tailored and close-cut suits that simply oozed class.

Sidney Poitier

A renaissance man at his core, it stands to reason that Poitier should have maintained a unique sense of style of fashion throughout his lifetime. A famous actor and a talented director, Poitier starred during a time when black leading men were rare and his overwhelming sense of charisma won the hearts of both male and female fans from around the globe. An inspiration to thousands, Poitier was always incredibly well dressed and looked fantastic in a tuxedo.

Robert De Niro

Due to his incredible acting skills and propensity to take on gritty roles, De Niro’s fashion sense is all too easily overlooked. While De Niro eschews style for substance in films such as Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, however, there are other titles where his impeccable dress-sense shines through. Take his reprisal of the tough gangster Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein in the hit film Casino, for example, in which he is always present in a well-tailored suit and perfectly matched accessories. Given the rise of popular online casinos, it says a great deal that De Niro’s presence in the film makes you want to put on your Sunday best and head out to your local establishment.

George Clooney

Recently featured in GQ’s list of the 20 most fashionable male icons, Clooney embodies American ease and manages to transcend the prevailing fashion trends. Choosing close and tailored suits that fit his own physique rather than the changeable demands of fashion, he maintains a classic dress-sense that should serve as an inspiration to men of all shapes and sizes.
