‘If…’: The Bluetones vs. The Divine Comedy

The Bluetones – If…

Chunky guitars chugging along with a lyrical hat tip to Glen Campbell’s ‘Wichita Lineman’ is the basis for the Bluetones’ hit ‘If…’ The song was the second single off their second album, 1998’s Return to the Last Chance Saloon. It reached number thirteen on the UK singles chart. The title is a reference to Lindsay Anderson’s film If…., which starred Malcolm McDowell. The video above would be a nightmare for an acrophobic with motion sickness!

The Divine Comedy – If…

Here’s a romantic, swelling love song from Neil Hannon. I mean, how many songs can boast the poetic lyrical verse: ‘If you were a horse, I’d clean the crap out of your stable and never once complain’? That’s love, folks. You can find this on A Short Album About Love.

Britpopping since I first heard 'Animal Nitrate' in 1993
